Lewis Moore grave

Lewis G. Moore is buried in White Co., AR near Floyd. There are stones under some white oak trees, Lewis Moore, his wife Susan Carlton, and their son Jim, born in 1857, and the unknown grave of a child. The 4 graves are marked with rocks, Lewis' grave is the only one with a readable gravestone. A log schoolhouse that also served as the Floyd church was built near the gravesite.

Lewis was born on 25 Mar 1833. He enlisted in the Confederate army on 24 Jun 1862. In 1873 he bought 280 acres of land in section 28 of White County. Lewis died around 1874.

The cabin built by Lewis Moore was moved to its present location near the graves. Two of the rooms are from the original cabin.

To get to the Moore Cemetery in Floyd, take Highway 31 north about 1/2 mile from AR 305. There is a road on the right that leads to Reed Access, Lake Barnett. About 200 yards past the Reed Access Road to Lake Barnett, the old house is on the right.

Columbus L. Moore and Mary J. Cato marriage license

This is the marriage record for Columbus Lewis Moore and Mary J. Cato. They were married in White County, AR on 13 Dec 1894. White Co. marriage records are on microfilm at the public library in Searcy, and I had gotten a copy of this a while back. But I wanted a better copy, so I went to the courthouse. They will not let you make photocopies, as the books are very old. So I had to settle for a picture.

What's puzzling to me about this marriage record, is that it states Columbus married Mrs. Mary J. Cato. Could she have been widowed previously? I searched the marriage records for a Mr. Cato that married a Mary, M., or J. and found nothing. There is an Emmett (Amos) Cato in the 1880 census listed with his wife Mary E. and children. There is a Sarah J. Cato listed with him, age 11. She would have been born around 1869, as was Mary. Could Mary and Sarah possibly be the same person? Possibly Mary changed her name because of her family background. Bonnie Baker-Palmer has some interesting information on the Cato family that you can read here. According to her, Sarah J. Cato married Lum Moore. Could Lum Moore be Columbus Moore and Sarah J. Cato be Mrs. Mary J. Cato?

Othur Bryan Moore and Claris Lillian Moore and their children

Othur Bryan Moore was the son of Columbus Lewis Moore and Mary Cato. He was born on 14 Feb 1897 in White Co., AR and died 28 Mar 1978 in Cleburne Co., AR. He married Claris Lillian Smith on 13 Apr 1918 in Cleburne Co., AR. She was the daughter of Milton Smith and Izorah Smith. She was born Aug 1897 in AR and died 1971. Othur and Claris are buried in Pearson Cemetery, Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR.
Children of Othur Moore and Claris Smith are:
1. Geraldine "Gerry" Moore, born 05 May 1919 in AR and died 14 Jun 2002 in Las Vegas, Clark Co., NV. She married Jay C. Layson. He was born 4 Dec 1914 in Michigan and died 1 Apr 2002 in Law Vegas, Clark Co., NV.
2. Cletis Laverne Moore, born 03 Sep 1921 in Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR and died 07 Oct 2005 in Conway, Faulkner Co., AR. He married Erjauna Claydeen Griffin 04 Apr 1943 in Heber Springs, Cleburne Co., AR. She was born 15 Jan 1928 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., OK. Cletis is buried in Thorn Cemetery in Greenbrier, AR.
3. Max L. Moore, born 30 Apr 1922 in Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR and died of a heart attack on 24 May 1980 in Jacksonville, Pulaski Co., AR. He married (1) Jacqueline. He married (2) Pauline L. Freeman. He always went by Max L., but the L. did not stand for anything. He was a Cleburne Co., AR tax assessor. He is buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Jacksonville, AR.
4. Juanita Moore, born Abt. 1926 in AR. She married (1) Tony Mastromatteo. She married (2) Jack about 1999.
5. Ferrel D. Moore, born 16 May 1929 in AR and died 19 Nov 2002 in Wayne Co., MI. He married Shirley Townsend. He is buried in Pearson Cemetery, Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR.
6. Kenneth Moore, born 29 Jan 1932 in Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR. He married Maudine Swinea on 02 May 1953 in Heber Springs, Cleburne Co., AR.
7. Richard L. Moore, born 31 Aug 1934 in Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR and died 19 Oct 1992. He married Jean. He is buried in Pearson Cemetery, Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR.
8. Othadean "Dean" Moore, born 15 Apr 1937 in Pearson, Cleburne Co., AR and died of pulminary fibrosis on 11 May 2003 in Conway, Faulkner Co., AR. She married John D. Cain on 07 Jul 1955. He was born 29 Nov 1933 and died 23 Sep 1996. They are buried in McGintytown Cemetery, Greenbrier, Faulkner Co., AR.

The Moores had two houses burn down where they lost everything. In one fire, a man was going by the house and saw the fire. Knowing that no one was home, he broke one of the windows to try to save something. The fire was so bad, all he could save was a photo album that was on a table by a window. One of the fires started after they got electricity, and mice chewed through the electrical wires. The family lost everything in both fires, including many family keepsakes.

Cletis L. Moore & Erjauna C. Griffin

Grandma Moore (Erjauna) told me that when she was younger, Cletis walked her home one time and told her that one day he was going to marry her. He used to travel for his job, and he would come back home to Arkansas, and she would forget about whatever boy it was she was interested at the time, to be with him. Erjauna's name was spelled wrong on their marriage license because Cletis never could spell it right until they'd been married several years. Cletis Moore & Erjauna Griffin were married on 4 Apr 1943 in Heber Springs, Cleburne Co., AR. This photo was taken when they lived in Michigan, and they celebrated their 25th anniversary in 1968.

Mary J. Cato

Mary J. Cato was born 16 Mar 1869 in Arkansas and died 16 Mar 1934 in Cleburne Co., AR. She married Columbus Louis Moore in White Co., AR. Mary and Columbus were the parents of Othur Bryan Moore. Sorry this isn't the greatest scan. I'm looking for more information on Mary if you know anything at all, please contact me.

This is the deed for the 200 acres Lewis G. Moore bought in White County, AR near Floyd in March 1860.
